Best Waterfront Dining on the Space Coast

Eat with a view — the restaurants where the Indian River, lagoon, and ocean are part of the meal

There's something about eating while watching water that slows time down. Brevard County is blessed with extraordinary water on both sides — the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Indian River Lagoon threading down the center, and the Banana River and Mosquito Lagoon adding even more stunning options to the north. These aren't just pretty settings — they're the source of most of what ends up on your plate. Here are the spots where the view is as good as the food.

1Squid Lips Overwater Grill — Indian River, Melbourne

The name says it all. Squid Lips sits directly over the Indian River next to Eau Gallie Pier, and the dining experience on the open deck makes you feel like you're floating. This is consistently ranked among Brevard's best waterfront experiences — not just for the setting, but because the kitchen actually delivers.

Order the smoked fish dip (a Squid Lips classic), then follow it with whatever's on the wood-fired grill. The oak smoke flavor on fresh fish is exceptional. Sunsets from the deck are among the best you'll find anywhere on the Space Coast, and the vibe is relaxed enough that no one's rushing you out. Come early on weekends — it fills up.

2Grills & Fishlips at Port Canaveral

Port Canaveral has two excellent waterfront options within walking distance of each other: Grills Seafood Deck & Tiki Bar and Fishlips Waterfront Bar & Grill. Both offer direct port views with cruise ships and fishing vessels as your backdrop — a thoroughly Florida experience.

Grills leans into the tiki bar energy with tropical drinks, fish tacos, and peel-and-eat shrimp. Fishlips counters with an excellent raw bar and solid happy hour specials. On a sunny Saturday afternoon, you could do a leisurely crawl between both. The proximity to A1A and the space center makes this a great stop on any cape adventure.

3Yellow Dog Cafe — Indian River, Malabar

Twenty-five years of waterfront dining excellence, situated on the Indian River in Malabar (the southern end of Brevard). Yellow Dog Cafe occupies a converted historic building with a dining room and patio that frame the river beautifully. This is the spot for a proper anniversary dinner or any occasion worth celebrating.

The kitchen takes the setting seriously — locally-sourced seafood, careful preparations, a wine list that respects the food. The rack of lamb and homemade desserts (particularly the dog bone fudge brownie) have been crowd favorites for years. It's $$$, but for a special evening on the water, it's worth every dollar.

4Vine & Olive — Indian River, Titusville

Titusville is underrated as a dining destination, and Vine & Olive is the best example of why that's changing. This modern Italian-Mediterranean restaurant has a "River Room" dining option with views of the Indian River, plus an outdoor patio with fire pit for cooler evenings.

The food is genuinely excellent: short-rib Bolognese, truffle mushroom ravioli, 24 rotating wines on tap. It's upscale without being stuffy, and the location near the NASA Causeway makes it an excellent post-launch dinner option. Watch a rocket launch, then celebrate with pasta and a glass of something from the tap wine selection.

5Balibar Wines & Grinds — Merritt Island

An unexpected gem on Merritt Island, Balibar operates as a coffee shop by morning and a wine bar with small plates by evening. The Bali-inspired aesthetic creates something genuinely unusual for Brevard County — warm, layered, atmospheric.

The small plates menu is thoughtfully done: cheese boards, charcuterie, small bites that pair well with the wine selection. The outdoor seating area has water proximity and the kind of calm that makes you want to linger. It opened in 2025 and has quickly built a devoted following among islanders.

6Cafe Coconut Cove — Indian River, Melbourne Beach

A German restaurant on the Indian River might not be what you expect, but Cafe Coconut Cove has been quietly doing its thing since 1987. No reservations are taken here — instead, you call ahead for wine pairings, then walk in and enjoy the riverfront setting at your own pace.

The pineapple pork is legendary among regulars. The Hungarian goulash shows up regularly on the menu and rewards anyone adventurous enough to order it. Sunsets from the waterfront tables here are genuinely spectacular, and the no-fuss, no-rush approach to hospitality is refreshing.

💡 Local Tips

  • Golden hour (one hour before sunset) is peak time at waterfront spots — arrive early to snag the best outdoor tables
  • Many waterfront restaurants have protected indoor seating for rainy days without sacrificing the view
  • Port Canaveral spots are best on weekdays — cruise ship passengers create weekend crowds
  • Call ahead at smaller spots like Yellow Dog and Cafe Coconut Cove — they can fill up quickly on weekends

Waterfront dining on the Space Coast isn't a novelty — it's a defining feature of life in Brevard County. From the tiki energy of Port Canaveral to the refined riverside dining in Malabar, these restaurants understand that water is their greatest asset. Sit down, take in the view, and let the pace of the lagoon slow everything down.
